Cast Iron Cheese and Chive Camp Bread

So last year I went glamping. Not camping mind you, because my hair doesn’t do outdoors, but I “roughed it” as well as I could. So when making up a new easy bread recipe, I thought this would be a great camp bread, you can make it ahead of time and cook it in your cast iron skillet over a fire.

Speaking of cast iron, I love them, I want one in every size and shape. It reminds me of camping without having to go outside. So whip up a batch of this easy bread made with cheddar cheese and chives, put it right in your cast iron skillet, wrap it up and take it with you. Makes a great side dish, snack, or you can open it up and use for bread on sandwiches (tent optional) Can also be seen on Foodgawker.com.

  • 1 tsp ground mustard
  • 1 tsp kosher salt

  • 2 T melted unsalted butter
  • ⅔ cup whole milk

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees (if making at home)
  2. Butter a 6 or 8 inch cast iron pan
  3. Mix flour, mustard, salt, ¾ cup of cheese and chives into a bowl, set aside
  4. Combine wet ingredients and fold into flour until combined
  5. Place dough into cast iron pan, spreading evenly
  6. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top
  7. Bake 25-30 minutes, or until cheese is melted and golden brown (if cheese starts to brown too quickly, you can add a piece of foil on top until finished baking)

Oh I’ve been waiting for this recipe since you posted the teaser the other day! This looks amazing, and I can’t believe how simple it is! I love my cast iron pan too and just like you, I want one in every size! :)

Too funny!! I just booked a ‘glamping’ trip for the summer. I will be taking my recently purchased cast iron skillet too. I am going to have to try this one out!! :-)

I had a lot of fun glamping, it’s my kind of roughing it. I am not meant for a tent, but I had a great time. I love cast iron!

Oh wow. Just hand me that pan and a fork please. Now that is a beautiful thing Janelle!!

I’m just starting to use cast iron more, and I’m loving it! I think the hardest thing for me to get used to is the clean up. I know that you’re not supposed to wash it with soap and water, but it’s really hard not to! :-)

    Great post! <3

Thanks again! Yes, cast iron can be a pain to clean, just make sure if you do use soap (eek) that you use a gentle one, and season it from time to time. I would make you food anytime
